nic marks: the happy planet index

as i listened to this talk, i was hurled back to a time when i was not only hopeful, but genuinely excited to see what the future would bring -- what we would find out, what we'd achieve.

while heroes struggle to unlock the mysteries that can not only save our species, but also produce wonders we have yet to even conceive, idiots are counting their virtual coins, bickering over their supernatural god-creatures and inventing new and improved methods to generate suffering and death.

there must be a way to help people wake up from their stupor and realize how marvelous existence can be.

item 1:

it spreads, it mutates, it refuses to die.

for the seventh year in a row, the mars hoax is infecting email boxes around the world. passed from one reader to another, the message states that on august 27th mars will approach earth and swell to the size of a full moon. 'NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN,' the email declares--always in caps.

news flash: it's not true.

i made a mistake while editing -- and my picture turned into the above... nevertheless, i decided that, while not a leading specimen of fine art photography, it was interesting enough to keep for a laugh.

but that's not the story here. the story lies behind the tentative description i keyed in last night, to caption my mistake:

i think i turned left when i should've turned right. this is just weird.
originally purple with yellow stamen.

'i turned left when i should've turned right'? what's steering a car got to do with anything?

well, it was my personal little giggle, an inside joke for a company of one, which no one else would understand, surely, as it's a reference to a dim memory of a short story i once read when i was a kid.

ok... still... so what?

well, this morning, my google reader's rss feed had, in the cool recommendations section, 3 items about a nine-day 100-km [60-mile for metrically challenged americans] traffic jam in beijing. [ah... beijing traffic -- i remember it well.]

the thing is, whenever i'm stuck in traffic, my mind escapes back to that elusive bit of science fiction.

so, this morning, since coincidence was slapping me in the face to conclusively satiate my curiosity and repair my failed memory, i embarked on a virtual search for the tale. it turns out others half-remembered this thing as well, because there is an actual page where people are discussing it and where was it from, and who wrote it, and does anybody else remember this?

so, i was triumphant in finding the great moveway jam, by john keefauver, originally published in omni magazine in 1979, with the description:

'for months they waited to be rescued from the mammoth traffic jam. then the copters came!'

uploaded in PDF format for your reading pleasure by the mysterious krewe du kat.

as i sleepily -- yet excitedly -- read this early this morning, i did a mental jig at locating the prized sentence:

'a little old lady, signaling for a right turn in ventura, made a left turn instead.'

are you still reading this?

via universe today, the newest in a fine series of images of all of us.

connor trinneer at terraformers ii - episode 3

i just finished up a run-through of star trek: enterprise DVDs and was surprised how many episodes i'd never seen! i paid special attention to connor trinneer's work, after having met him at terraformers ii, which is quite simply the coolest star trek gathering in the world, located at stunning sounion.

connor trinneer
give him a click!
connor is fun to meet -- he's approachable, funny and easy to talk to -- and i was fascinated by how he's genuinely interested in his fans. my meeting him, in addition to the Q&A sessions, spiked up my appreciation for the thoughtful and effective acting he did on enterprise, and how he made a complex job seem almost effortless.

enterprise was the series that illustrated the transformation of our present-day culture into the hopeful, optimistic future of humanity's potential, as originally envisioned by gene roddenberry. characters like trip depict us as we are, but with humanity's most valuable traits: our drive to conquer our reluctance to embrace the strange and unknown, to satisfy our curiosity to explore, to learn, and our innate impulse to do good... in short, the foundation for the best that's yet to come.

i processed the hell out of this picture because the lights cast shadows on his face. i'm way too timid to use a flash, or to become annoying by taking too many pictures. still, i'm glad i got this, and maybe i'll be a bit more brave at terraformers iii!

for christopher hitchens.

i have recently been moved to send a personal message -- this is a public one.

christopher hitchens' writing and speaking has influenced me on many levels.

yes, i'm a lifelong atheist, and now an unapologetic one, thanks in part to the realizations brought on by him... but it's not only that. whether i agree with him on issues or not, he's helped me to get to the heart of them and think in clearer terms.

obviously, i'm distressed that this person who i admire is ill, but, seeing as how he's handling his predicament, and how he has a unique way of approaching even the direst of circumstances, i suspect he's going to surprise us all with his best work yet.

so, again unapologetically, my blog contains a lot of hitchens, and will continue to do so, as i wish him well.

friends will be glad to know that he's back in action, as he's scheduled to debate david berlinski in birmingham, alabama, on the issue of how atheism poisons everything on september 7th. my thanks to daily hitchens for the heads-up.
