new photo blog

i started this blog in 2006, and it's shifted along with my interests through the years. it's been witness to a lot of learning for me...

still, i feel that i need a home for my photography -- so from now on, i'll be posting my pictures on the journal on my reworked website. if you like my photos, you might decide to follow me there!

my first post is here -- check it out!

as for this blog, i'm not sure what will happen. i don't think i'm willing to let it go, and certainly i'll keep it as an archive, but i need some time to figure it out.

for those of you that pop in from time to time, thanks for the visits and encouragement.

susan blackmore: the third replicator

a couple of years ago, susan blackmore presented a talk at TED about genes, memes and temes. today, sentient developments linked to an article on the same subject on by blackmore, on the NYT.

'... now, in the early 21st century, we are seeing the emergence of a third replicator. i call these temes (short for technological memes, though i have considered other names). they are digital information stored, copied, varied and selected by machines. we humans like to think we are the designers, creators and controllers of this newly emerging world but really we are stepping stones from one replicator to the next.'

the entire piece is here.

...just spreading my memes....

The term is already encompassed within the definition of 'meme' as far as I can tell. Dennett has always provided a much better treatment of memes in my opinion (and I've met them both).
