winter sky over chania

winter sky over chania
if you like it, click it!

chania exists in winter, too! it's been raining heavily since we arrived so i've had few opportunities to take pictures - but there were a few breaks in the clouds. the harbor isn't as well lit as it is in the summer and there are less people.

i like that there are no crowds.

this is the harbor and the lighthouse is to the right.

pendeli volunteer reforestation project

i didn't get too lazy after all and actually went to the reforestation project on pendeli on sunday morning. a surprising crowd of people showed up -- i can't estimate because groups were coming in from different sides of the mountain. i'll update this post with numbers if i see them in the press.

pendeli: volunteer reforestation project pendeli: volunteer reforestation project pendeli: volunteer reforestation project

civil servants, private companies, scouts, universities, schools -- it looked like every organization had people there. there were children and senior citizens, natives and expats. it was very well set up -- each organization had a sign on the road indicating what section of the area to work on, the ground was pretty much already prepared, and the trees dropped off at intervals to help the work go quickly and smoothly.

pendeli: volunteer reforestation project

it didn't take too long for a light rain to start, which was probably a good thing for the new trees.

pendeli: volunteer reforestation project

i think people left with a sense of achievement, solidarity, and a feeling of having had fun!

pendeli: volunteer reforestation project

i may have been overdoing it with little planets lately, but they're fun to do... and this image of people all around a little globe working on a common goal is something i want to post:

scorched earth: this place was once green

scorched little planet -- pendeli: 22/365
if you like this picture, please click it to its page on flickr.
yesterday, i was asked to participate in a volunteer reforestation and i agreed, just before setting out to pendeli to get a nice view of an athenian sunset. i had the urge to explore new bits of the area and started up a road i had never seen... when i saw this.

scorched pendeli

it seems that i had unwittingly gone to the very spot where people will be gathering on sunday to plant new trees.

i drove past the stretch of scorched earth and doubled back when i started seeing houses again -- then i decided to take a dirt road that lead up to a hill, to get a better view.

scorched pendeli

as i approached the top, the clouds were moving faster and it started drizzling lightly. i began to feel anxious because i didn't want to get my car stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere, so i quickly took some shots for my little planet, a few more around the area, and made my way back down.

this is what has happened to our fraction of a pale blue dot. good luck to the reforestation project on sunday and their efforts to make pendeli green again.

atheist ads 'not breaking code'

at the BBC:

'an atheist uk bus campaign which uses the slogan "there's probably no god" does not breach the advertising code, a watchdog has ruled.

the advertising standards authority said it assessed 326 complaints. some claimed the wording was offensive to people who followed a religion.

but the body concluded the adverts were unlikely to mislead or cause widespread offence and closed the case.'
